I've had sat and cable internet before. Is there something stopping me from getting equipment that meets viasats specs that I can purchase myself?

I'm sure others can answer this to more length but the short answer is yes, there is.  Only the Viasat modem will work.  You can, however, add a router of your own choosing behind the modem to handle your own local network.

No you cannot. The Viasat modem is nothing like a cable modem. Viasat will not give you the sepcs nor the information on why only Viasat modems work but, they have to do things no cable modem will ever be designed to do.

Hello Kevin,  No you cannot replace any of Viasat equipment with a purchased one. As Bev mentioned we preset each modem with special specifications which align with the satellite and your location.

Also the ViaSat modem has propriety firmware that decompresses the incoming and compressed data stream...and ViaSat will update the modem's firmware from tome to time..
