Can anyone give some DHCP advise?

I am a  new customer to Exede, and The engineer turned up, installed the satellite dish and aligned it, plugged in the ViaSat modem and left. I have been trying to get reliable internet access, The exede helpdesk tells me to let my router (A buffalo WHR600D) set itself up automatically. When I do that the router makes a connection with the Viasat Modem and everything work great until around 5:00am in the morning, then the internet connection breaks and the router tells me the DHCP is not assigned. If I click auto setup, it reestablishes a connection with the modem and everything is good until 5:00am the next morning, when I get the same issue again, I have to rerun automatic setup every day to establish internet access!! As you can imagine this is becoming a real nuisance. I know nothing about DHCP or PPoe or setting it up. It seems to me that something is timing out at 5L:00am everyday so it should be easy to tell the router to automatically renew the DHCP lease every morning, but I cant see anywhere that I can set that up. Would welcome all suggestions.

It sounds like you have router problems. Do you have another one you can use or borrow to try? A lot of people have older ones around when they upgrade.

my previous service (Time Warner) provided the router & modem (Cable service) so I don't have any other routers, bought this one specially for this service.. If I get another router, is there a suggested model or make that works well with the ViaSat Modem?

ASUS RT-AC68U

I have one and it's the best router I've ever owned.

You can read about it HERE

'Google' it to find the best price if you decide to get one.

If you have no experience with routers, this one will be overkill.

I use an ASUS routr  nery similar to the one Craig mentioned. They as very good routers, reasonably priced, and include traffic monitoring features so you can track all internet traffic going to and from the internet, great for comparing the numbers with that of the Exede meter.

Ensure that the latest firmware version is installed - looking at their web site, some of the later versions mention fixes for DHCP related problems. Couldn't get to their manual for it, but typically there is something within the configuration utility's UI to install the latest firmware - obviously avoid the 5:00 AM time frame when updating it.

I have confirmed that I have the latest firmware installed, so nothing to do there. Don't want to buy another router, thinking about paying Geek squad $100 to set it up for me. Have always managed to set my own networks up myself for the last 15 years so don't like to admit defeat, but I don't have a clue where to start for this issue. Can someone tell me if a satelite link is considered an "always on" connection like cable or a "On Demand" connection? I tried changing the option and it didn't seem to make any difference, but it would be nice to set it correctly.

Your Exede satellite connection is "Always on". Make sure your router is set up for"Automatic IP" since Exede does not offer fixed IP addresses except on business accounts.

Save your money with geek squad... they cannot fix your Issue., its exede or your router.... hands down... does your router work correctly on a different internet?

Try a new router.....if it does nkt fix it.... return it...then call exede.

Hi Gary, Our forum member gave you excellent advice. The router
appears to be the issue. Have you tried to connect directly to the modem and
your computer to see if you get the same message? That will also help you
determine if it is the router or Exede service. If you need any additional
support, send us your account and contact information to
exedelistens@viasat.com. Thanks

Well the new Asus Router arrived today, got a little worried as the simple setup wizard wouldn't work, doesn't inspire confidence when a simple wizard wont run!!) but managed to log in directly to the router and set everything up, will see if I have a stale DHCP tomorrow or not!! The Wifi seems to be working a lot better than before so have everything crossed that this solves all my problems!! Will let you know tomorrow!!

Just wanted to say a final thank you to everyone that participated in this, the new router has been connected for 3 days, has not needed a single reboot, the wifi network has been more reliable than at any time I can recall in the last 8 years! The internet connection has remained stable and operational!! A complete success, I don't know how Buffalo can sell such a pile of rubbish for a router, it has never worked properly, (I didn't realize it was the router that caused all my problems) but I am exceedingly happy with the ASUS router.  Many thanks.
