Hello Exede,

This is day 1 of my Exede service. I was told I would have 12Mbps down 3Mbps up speeds.  I am currently getting 3.5Mbps down and 1.1Mbps up.

This isn't going to work for me if this is how it will be.  Fix this please.

Hey Michael, I would offer some words of wisdoms here bit wouldn't help sadly. I too had slow speed from day one but was able to talk to Exede Beau and there techs on there end and he was able to get me fixed. Its not that your on a congested beam necessarily but most likely just on a congested gateway server. Give them a little bit and one of the three Exede foks here will have you send them an email and they will take a look at your account and see what they can do :)

Michael - Do you get decent speeds early morning or mid day?  If your slow speeds are primarily in the evenings and weekends then you may be on a congested beam (relief unlikely) or a congested gateway (relief is possible).  In any event, one of the Exede moderators will likely contact you and help you sort this out.

Yea Michael, good luck with that. I ran a speed test a couple days ago, and I was downloading at 1.96 mbs and uploading at 1mbs. It will vary from day to day. I will tell you this 12 mbs is a pipe dream as far as I can see. The best I have seen In three months is 3.4 mbs

Hmm... well hopefully they can help me tomorrow.  I need consistently above 10Mbps otherwise they can come pick up their equipment and contract.

Thomas, if this is not just at the beginning of the LNFZ or sometimes during prime time, (and it shouldn't be that slow in primetime) you have some fixable problem. I'm on a crowded closed beam and I get 18 to 20Mbps or better out of the above times and very seldom this slow in prime time.

Contact Exede Beau about it. There's no need to live with this speed when it can almost for sure be fixed.

Edit - I just ran a couple tests on testmy.net and I'm getting 7 to 10Mbps in prime time and outside the first couple hours of the LNFZ this the worst it gets.

There is a cell tower really close to me and I get a really good LTE signal. I've been thinking of switching to that $100 2 lines unlimited LTE plan.

Try testmy.net... not as visually appealing as what appears to be ookla here, but I find it a better gauge of relative speed (and that's all these speed tests are- relative to a specific time frame and a specific server you got this speed result). Be sure to specify a sufficient file size, although testmy does retry until it can sustain a download for 7 seconds to ensure more accurate results, If you've got data to spare try a larger download size - during the LNFZ I'll test with 50 or 100 MB for grins yielding a more accurate average speed for the most part. Also for grins, I'll run a test against their Australia, Hong Kong or Euro servers and typically expect lower results.

Regardless, it's all relative to the server your testing against, the route and number of hops taken to the server. In my case, ookla defaults to a Virginia server and I am in Virginia but they fail to account for the minimum 88000 mile round trip  - meaning that after bouncing off the satellite to my gateway in Nevada then the Accelenet Server in Salt Lake it makes it's way back to Virginia before turning around and going back the way it came. In addition some question the validity of speed tests that use flash since it involves some additional guesswork.

The only accurate measure of Exede's speed would be if ViaSat were to host a speed test at your Gateway or Accelenet server. They have little control over speed or congestion that occurs outside of their own network infrastructure - specifically, your modem <-> satellite <-> gateway <-> accelenet server.

Your speed is only going to be as good as the slowest hop. Speed tests are like crash tests - they can both be gamed. The real question is whether you get speeds on average that allow you to get what you want done and that's a subjective interpretation.  No ISP guarantees a minimum speed that I know of.

But yeah, let Beau take a look to rule out something on Exede's end.

Tommy, I would check into the LTE and ask some serious questions. As far as I know, there is no real unlimited cell data plans except a few old grandfathered in ones. All the ones I found there is an Astrix.

* So many giga bytes at full speed (usually not many) then the rest at a drastically lowered speed.

Watch how you do a speed test. If you want the true speed pause/turn off any anti-virus software and windows defender. They handle all Internet packets which slows down your speed. For example, my PC tests around 6mb with Kaspersky, when I pause it I get 17-19mb. My iPad which does run anti-virus always gets 16-19 mb.
