Beam closed

I’m both surprised and kind of impressed. My small beam in central Virginia is closed to new subscribers. It was only opened on 6/1/18. Does anyone know if this is due to capacity or an issue? Prime time speeds dropped to 5 mbps in less then 3 months on the Gold 50 plan so apparently there are a lot of subscribers. Just wondering if this is the new standard to maintain acceptable speeds on the new satellite.

Someone with eVST access I think can look how many users/endpoints are on your beam....heck I think you can work out subscription numbers from it. It been getting more locked down and extra info is being removed, maybe someone did...

Nathan, your small beam is semi-famous for filling up so rapidly.

I know a dealer up there who just spent a large sum of money on mailers that ended up going out to folks in that beam. Total waste of money.

So Andy you believe it is capacity related then?

If it's closed, it's capacity.

Shows how successful small beams can be if positioned correctly and servicing the right areas (I e. areas where people are desperate and have no other option but satellite internet).

I actually agree with the closing of beams..  I would have rather Viasat tell me I cannot buy access than to charge me and not deliver some sort of acceptable standard..  I would say Kudos for that..

I agree. The problem right now is capacity isnt directed where it is needed, while other areas have too much capacity and not enough subs.

Nathan:  Thanks for posting this.  I'm actually relieved to see this.  I live between Northern VA and Shenandoah, on the foot hills of a mountain.  I have been doing tests 24/7 and had to implement QOS, rate limiting, device quotas and advanced FW/LAN setup to make my new service workable.

Andy:  if you remember, this was the exact issue I ran into, a new small beam on viasat2 that was over subscribe.  I checked the viasat site today and saw that my beam\service in my zip code is no longer available.

I hope they bring more beams online so its consistently better for all of us now.

Thanks!  Its been on our bucket list for decades to move to an area like this, was on fiber prior, but its worth the trade off to be here.

Lower Shenandoah valley. So much history. Far but close to D.C. if you want to visit.

I am amazed by the lack of mobile coverage in that area. Drive less than 10 miles from Winchester and no cell service. In areas where it would seem to be easy to deliver that!

The towers where I am at are able to cover 2 solid bars of voice, but they throttle the data to less than 1m.  At 2-3am, I can get 12-25m down.  The rest of the area is very difficult.  It is something they are working on.

Wow! Same here. I just checked and Viasat is "not available". On the one hand, I'm sad to see that our beam is so full, that access has been closed off. On the other hand, I'm pleased to see Viasat is doing something about it.

I also have no options (other than "call us") when I click on Change Plans. I have no intention of changing plans, I'm just curious to see what the offerings are.

Interesting times...

Better not be too "negative"!  Remember what happened to Andy!
