Let me guess. You want to upgrade the original modem and your uncle is either a lawyer or a mob boss?

Another Sunday morning, and so here come the very strange posts.

Does anyone know what the "Lifetime plan" is?

Actually I do.. There was a time you could pay a set amount for a "lifetime" lease on the modem to avoid the "monthly" lease fee. That, of course, is only good for the original modem model. So if you upgrade to the modem with Wi-Fi or upgrade to Viasat-2, that lifetime "plan" is no longer applicable.

That is correct. It won't apply if you change to the new modem or move/start a new account.

He may be talking about the lease fee for equipment...Dish offered a plan to pay the lease fee for 2 years instead of a monthly fee....and he mistakenly believes it was for "Lifetime" when it is only good for 2 years then reverts to a monthly lease fee.

Exede did offer the Lifetime Lease back in 2012 when they were trying to get Wildblue subscribers to switch to Exede. I purchased the lifetime lease, and it was a good deal. Viasat still honors the lifetime lease, but if I remember correctly, it was only offered for a few months.

The lifetime lease is altered if you change to the new modem or start a new account/move. feel free to email us at viasatlistens@viasat.com if you have questions or concerns

Sirius did the same thing in its infancy. You could but a "lifetime" subscription for like $450. Of course, that too only applied to the original hardware which wouldn't last for a "lifetime" as we know it. Maybe the lifetime of the device, which was 4 or 5 years before becoming outdated or obsolete.

That's correct it's lifetime for that particular device most like the Surfbeam 2 modem that didn't include WiFi.

XM radio did the same thing, life time subscription 350 dollars. for the radio i had in my 2004 Avalanche.  I came very close to doing it.  One morning i tried to tune into one of my favorite channels, Acid Jazz, it had been replaced by SPA, elevator go to sleep music.  I called in and they said our programming is always subject to change.

I didn't get the lifetime subscription, who knows what programming they would have ended up with.   I actually cancelled my XM for about 6 months.  Now i just do the 6 months for 25 dollars.  Still have the Avalanche, 57K miles on it, garage kept, still looks like new.

I don't know the details of  the deal or what modem we are talking about, but when it comes to hardware, technology, computers, it probably was not a good deal, obsolescence.

Got my lifetime equipment lease a year ago February for $299.99, so you don't break even until the 2 1/2 year mark. Not sure if I'll stay past my 2 year commitment, and I definitely would not  change to Viasat 2 and incur another 2 year commitment. This is a terrible company to do business with! Anything they offer that sounds good to the customer, they have some legal mubo jumbo make sure they can take it away!
