Why was I never notified that I would be billed for Annual Property Tax Recovery Fee of $4.20? And why am I now having to pay for this?

Been happening for years. And I have read similar complaints for years.

Wish they would just roll it in the monthly lease fee cost and be done with it.

Because there are many states that do not assess this fee. Mine does not, and I don't wish to pay for other people's taxes.

Did the $4.20 bankrupt you?  OMG, find something to do with your time!

The issue for some is that they are on very tight budgets or fixed incomes. Even an unexpected $4.20 can lead to overdraft problems/headaches/other actions if being debited directly from a bank account. Whether that's the case here is subject to debate. Regardless a heads up by Viasat might be a nice touch for those who find themselves in that situation (should anyone actually be listening).

Amen, Old Labs!  And besides, it's just galling to have to pay an additional fee on top of the substantial monthly charge we already pay for Viasat's lackluster product.  (The only benefit to encroaching suburbia in the semi-rural area where I live is that I'll have more choice of internet providers!)

Stephen, you do realize you pay many taxes and fees for other people don't you? Look at all those surcharges on the phone bill. They had to pay for the Obamaphones somehow!

The $4.20 did not bankrupt me, I just wish Viasat would notify their customers to expect an increase in their bill.

President Obama gets too much credit for the free phones.  That stuff was actually started by President Reagan.

What's funny is that many haven't figured out that this community, as well as the often missed old forum, were established by the marketing department to develop brand advocates and product supporters while allowing a customer-to-customer self-help venuie... in what alternate universe would a marketing department allow the open promotion and solicitation of a competitor's product?

If it were a site supported by your business, would you allow that? Undoubtedly somebody from on high dropped the hammer.

I miss the old forum. I could send a private email message to people like Gwen or Old Labs (R.I.P.). Something similar to what DSLReports has today. Try it Gwen. I know the Walrus is on there, and somebody on my ignore list.

When the death of the old forum was announced, the former director of communications marketing recalled the resistance he received in establishing it under Viasat's oversight. Most of the suits felt it would simply devolve into a Viasat bashing venue and non-stop complaints. Most of the regulars over there were quick to chase away those who weren't really interested in the self-help concept. The format was better suited to keeping complaints in the appropriate categories where they could be ignored.

They should have kept the old forum and pulled the plug on this one, IMHO. Probably best to pull the plug on this one at this point since it's devolved into nothing more than a non-stop monkey spit fight affirming the suit's worst fears. The old forum had a wealth of information that could be more easily searched and located eliminating the need for the same questions over and over and over....

I'm not dead, I'm just not me and I wasn't Old Labs over there but rather LabRescuer ;)

@CO....dropped the hammer.

As noted, VS's previous MO was about pleasing commercial customers.  But with Exede/Viasat, they can't please all consumer customers, especially when removing bandwidth for usage on commercial accounts.  Hence, most likely, someone was aiming for "respect" with a change in venue.

As a sidenote, rejigging affected 150gig plans on VS-1 begs the question if they planned on doing this...in other words, was this a ruse for pumping up the revenue until aircraft came online.  A data bean counter could pin the tail on this donkey.

@Gwen

Yes, companies like users being in the dark, and tend to eliminate when possible those who walk different paths.  I"m still seeing positive reviews on Viasat, but I suspect there are kickbacks (paid mouths).  With Viasat, YMMV, and this message is not being delivered.  One reviewer suggested recently, we all could get 100Mbps service....Right!

No need for that... everything you say yields a few chuckles here. Like ExSatUser I now come here primarily for the entertainment value you and a few others provide.

Yep still missing it and for the same reason.

Somebody dropped the hammer on the legacy 150 GB conversations because they turned into ongoing promotions of a competitor's service. Somebody said shut 'em down because the moderators were giving those conversations full rein. Similarly other conversations that drifted towards competitor promotion were closed; and Gwen even had a post or two deleted for that very same reason.

Matt Farr (former Director of Marketing Communications) outlined the reasons for closing the old forum in his announcement there - none of it had anything to do with your suspicions. This community was thought to integrate better with Viasat's social media plans at that time - not that it ever panned out that way other than the ability to sign in with other social media accounts. It also wasn't a coincidence that the timing was concurrent with the re-branding efforts prior to the launch of Viasat-2 services and provide a uniform message.  At the same time, this venue allowed Viasat to cultivate and recognize those subscribers who were brand advocates prior to the actual closing of the old forum.

Enough said on my part... but do carry on without me.

@CO....still missing it

What is stated can represent two interpretations...words/deeds are important, but slick Willy is all about presentation.  I'm aware there is a lounge, so to speak, for those "special people" here. From my conversations with a corporate person, I'm aware of their concerns about image presentation.  What was that you said, "Undoubtedly somebody from on high dropped the hammer."  I would never mention his name.

Btw, here's a way to generate "fake faces," for those who need one.

The Walrus speaks true.

When the 150GB policy change happened we sort of gave a little space to let folks vent and simply put it got out of hand so a little clean-up and purging happened and will continue to happen.

To be blunt this is a Viasat operated and controlled forum FOR Viasat customers to help with current Viasat issues. Posts were being hijacked with unrelated discussions, solicitations were popping up and we're not allowing it as it's a blatant violation of forum rules. There's plenty of other places to do that. Not here.

I went with Excede last September and this last bill is the first time I've EVER been charged this fee. Why wasn't I ever charged with it before if it's supposedly been going on for years???

Because it's assessed on a yearly basis (not monthly) right about this time (or January) for most like most property taxes - this would be your 1st iteration if you went with Exede in September.

It is only charged once a year, per the requirements of your state, municipality. Many states do not assess this fee, others do.

I read the link you provided about the property tax recovery fee and it explicitly states the tax is on leased equipment.  My equipment was purchased, not leased, about 10 years ago.  Why am I being charged this fee?

Thanks, I sent an email and Matt answered promptly letting me know that I should not have been charged this fee since I own the equipment.  Credit for the charges is in process for my next bill.

Alice, you do not own the Viasat equipment, or modem. You paid for a lifetime lease, thereby you are not paying the $9.99 per month lease fee, but you did not purchase the equipment.

RE: "Why was I never notified..."

As a court would say, its your responsibility to know the laws/ordinances/etc.

And yes, those who make them use 'backdoor' taxes" these days, and then proclaim, "I didn't raise your property taxes."
