Over the past few days I have been receiving telephone calls from someone who claims to represent Exede. He uses what I consider to be a very bad, fake East Indian accent. He said that he was following up on a performance issue with my internet connection. I have not reported any performance issue to Exede. I told him that I was not going to answer any of his questions and I hung up the phone. I wrote down the phone number that my cell phone said he called from and tried to find out about it on the web. The number is somewhere in Austin, Texas (I live outside of Austin). The next day my cell phone rang and I saw that it was the same number so I rejected it. A few minutes later I got a call from a different number with a different area code. I answered it, said hello, heard a few beeps and my phone began to dial the original number that this person called from. I cancelled the call. Not long after this I received notification of about 4 or 5 text messages from this number. I deleted them all and blocked the number. Later on when I returned home I checked my e-mail and I found that I received an e-mail from a company in Austin called 'Universal Satellite' in Pflugerville, just north of Austin. Several words in the message were misspelled and the grammar used was poor. I have not responded to this e-mail and I have not called any of the numbers associated with it. This sounds like some sort of scam or phishing operation to me. In the e-mail they say that they want to come out and check the installation but they don't mention my physical address. It occurs to me, as Exede knows where I live, that the e-mail would have said "We would like to check the installation at (my address)". The email used poor punctuation and there were several instances where capital letters should have been used but weren't. I would like to think that a company as large as Exede employs people and affiliates with better communication skills than that. Are these people on the level or am I being set up for something? As I have said previously I have reported no performance issues to Exede so I don't see why they would need to come out and check something that is not malfunctioning. What is going on here?
