Advertised speed vs Reality....

I am interested in upgrading to one of the 25MB plans. Can Exede tell me what the average speed that I can expect is? I pay for 12MB now and RARELY see 6 or 8MB - let alone the 12MB they promised.

If I upgrade to 25MB, what can I come to expect??. I dont want to pay for double and get half.

Thank you

I don't think you will see anymore speed if you upgrade Al.  If you're not getting 12mbs on a regular basis, I can't see a reason you would all of a sudden get faster speeds, unless we are assuming Exede is throttling you down to 6-8mbs on your current plan.  And I don't believe that.

Unless you just want the new router or higher data plan, I'd wait till ViaSat 2 comes online.

Thank you.. I just find it disappointing that Exede can advertise something yet not be obligated to deliver. Seems like there would be laws that protect the consumer in cases like this. Nevertheless, It's all I can get in my area and if it's consistent, then I'd shut up. By the way, 6-8MB is a good day. 3-4MB is what I see when I measure it. I dont think Exede is throttling, I believe it's saturation of our signal. Capacity issues... Who knows, it might be 12MB today and everyday when I am at work, but herein lies the dilemma.

What is this ViaSat 2 Bradley speaks of? Is there a timeline and a significant performance upgrade?

Thank you again,

Pretty cool tech.  Will definitely get faster speeds starting in late January/ early February.

Yes performance will be significantly upgraded with the additional capacity of Viasat-2.

IMHO speed is definitely overrated and with the high ping rate satellite is going to have, what is 25Mbps going to give you that 12Mbps can't.

4K Ultra streaming - videophile!

Do I really need to include one of these ;)

P.S. But to be honest it does buy multi-user/device households something and would be best marketed toward those requiring multiple simultaneous use. A single user single task focused - not so much.

Not on the 4K Bandwagon...yet. I will be on Viasat-2 though, or whatever plan can deliver me HD! If that is a 25Mbps plan, so be it.

If you have the Excede Modem you should get 25 I know I do but in the evening it drops to 15.I would wait until Jan .I have freedom 150 with the 25 up and it has worked pretty good for me.I did have 12 up with the use of a belkin router before I got the equipment from Excede.I did have some problems losing my connection a few times but when I complained online they checked my connection for me and helped me.Hopefully we will get better speeds with the new service on Viasat 2.

That looks like a search engine speed test, check the ping on that, which isn't shown in the picture above. I would guess it claims under 1 ms and, that is not possible, thus it makes the whole test questionable, at best and, likely totally inaccurate.

That is also while the test is in progress, just winding up, not the final result, it says nothing about your actual speed.

Offhand, that appears to be Bing's search speed test and is suspect.

Choose your speed test wisely, not all are created equal, nearly all are simulations not reflecting reality, and some are simulating alternate realities (e.g. fast.com is simulating your NetFlix experience).

For some recommendations and help in choosing the right one, see the following and some of its links:

https://www.lifewire.com/internet-speed-test-sites-2626177

For my money, testmy.net is most accurate plus I like the ability to view and compare ressult against ViaSat users. One caveat, choose a manual download size of greater 12 MB for accuracy and to account for the added latency inherent on satellite internet:

http://testmy.net/download

For that reason, I tend to discount any logged results that have a lesser download size at:

http://testmy.net/host-history/viasat

They tend to be more innacurate and always on the low side due to the latency.

Also, if you use a media blocker, like UBlock Origin or Ublock, disable it before testing with TestMy, otherwise it will give you inaccurate, very much impossible results like this LOL (no that isn't right, the modem is not even capable of that speed.)

Yep they all have their quirks to look out for (I had one that showed 2.4 Gbps - it was awsome while it lasted I downloaded the entire intenet for future use).

I've just started using an account with my beam number on it (also an important variable when comparing against others and ensuring an apples to apples comparison) Pretty easy to figure out who I am and where and now I see/know you, but know your beam anyway.
