A note on Harvey the Hurricane

I just went over and talked to the guys in our network operations center to see what they thought of the hurricane bearing down on Texas. The only one of our gateways (the large antennas that point to the satellite) in the area is one that serves our WildBlue customers. That one is in Laredo. These are made to withstand very high winds, but if they do get up to sustained speeds of 120 mph, we might "stow" the antenna by taking it offline and pointing it directly upward (they call it the "birdbath" position). We're keeping a very close eye on the hurricane and have topped off the emergency generator tank -- which can power the gateway for up to 2 weeks -- in case there's an outage. This gateway serves WildBlue customers in a number of states outside of Texas, so if you have an outage during the height of the hurricane, this could be why.

If you're an Exede customer, you shouldn't have to worry about a general outage. With heavy rain, you could see a degradation of service in the form of slower speeds, but it shouldn't last long. We'll update this post with any news but hopefully this hurricane won't do too much damage.

I just went through the Hurricane/Tropical Storm Harvey here south of Seguin, TX. That storm came within 20 miles of us. How do I know this? Because my Exede Internet stayed up the whole time! The winds and rain were ferocious and I was quite frankly pleasantly surprised when my Internet connection continued without a burp. I was able to monitor the storm, keep in touch with friends and even watch Netflix. I've always liked the Exede service but this time it survived the "Hurricane" test.
Keep up the good work, Exede, and thank you for being there when all else was in turmoil }:-)

I am in Hitchcock TX (Galveston County) and mine goes down constantly. Even in a normal rain storm let alone the down pours and wind from Harvey. I am thankful I have my cell phone and Verizon who is suspending data overages for customers affected by Harvey. I am glad you are safe, pray for Harris County(Houston and surrounding areas) and Galveston County(Galveston Island and surrounding areas) it's pouring right now.
