There are some good techs but a lot of bad ones. Part of the problem is that this business fluctuates so wildly.....this makes it difficult to keep good people. People's bills tend to be somewhat fixed, especially when it comes to things like rent, auto loans, etc. A tech's pay is all over the place. He might have a really good month only to see jobs drop by half the next. It's hard to raise a family with any type of stability this way. Add in the fact that the new installation procedures for VS2 can easily make a 2 hr job a 4 hr job, and working in this business is even less attractive.
I would NEVER recommend anyone get into satellite installation work...for any company.

No disrespect intended, but any company that subcontracts installs is just using a bad model. I’ve always believed that if you hired professional people and took care of them (benefits, pay, etc), the outcome will always be more than worth the costs.
Same with customer service. Save a few dollars to lose millions in the long run. Greed will catch up to all companies eventually.

Its tough though like Andy said. Installs don't happen on a regular basis.
Bradley. More and more companies are going the subcontractor route. Even our local power companies are now subcontracting out a majority of their line work. The cost of getting the work done the way it was in the past was simply too expensive.
That's why I do all my own installation work and why I am so aggravated by the tendency these days of companies to not support those who are in the field actually doing the work.....everyone can't sit behind a desk and enjoy the AC...sooner or later, somebody has to go out and actually sweat and get the job done.

Unless a company has a widespread customer base, and by widespread I mean millions, and they are adding new new customers at a good clip, it's not nearly as economically feasible to hire their own installers as it is to subcontract.
Its never as cheap. Point being sometimes you get what you pay for.

28: The Viasat mobile phone app makes it easy to run diagnostics on your Viasat equipment.
The app IS very helpful IF people will take the time to download it and set it up. You'd be amazed at how many customers simply will not take the time to do it. When we mention it to people we get a pause and then "can you do it for me". No.

I ran the app yesterday on my phone when we didn't have any internet and app said everything was fine and dandy. So I thought my Asus router must have taken a dump. I disconnected the router and restored the wifi in the Viasat modem and was back on the net. Then had to redo all the wifi connection on my devices. This morning I checked this forum and see Viasat had trouble over a wide area and it was likely they had restored about the time I redid the Viasat modem. Viasat needs a better way to inform you when they have troubles.

I had some funny things lined up but management was a bit worried. Reminds me of the time I took a bath in ramen noodle soup and posted in on YouTube. My name was brought up in several upper management meetings where I worked. It was a global company, so once a few people at my location saw the video, it spread like wildfire. People still talk about it to this day.
It's unfortunate that Jim Carrey beat out Stephen for the role of Stanley Ipkiss - sorry that was the first thing that came to mind with that hat.
