1st Steam Store, PSN, & XBOX LIVE. And now [Amazon]!

I've been noticing the last few days during the Late Night Free Zone, Amazon.com would work just fine.
But soon as the DAP kicks in, Amazon would not display correctly! I could get into the site just fine (unlike Steam)
but it would not display properly (here's a screenshot)! Just words but no pictures. Can't even find the Log-In button!

Again, everything shows correctly during the Late Night Free Zone. All of these sites are just Stores, so
why are they being [Blocked], or DAP ?

I guess eBay will be next!!

I have seen this as well when DAP'd in the past.  According to the what has been posted on this forum, they do not block this traffic, yet if I connect a 3g device that has 1 bar of service and only about 20k download speed to my computer, I can pull up the whole site.

This points back to when DAP'd there are things that just will not work, which according a post in a different thread, should not be the case.

Things should work, just be very, very, very slow.  Now I've locked everything way down at my house and upgraded my account to have more data, so it has not been a problem for me as I have not gone over, but I would really like to see this fixed.  It didn't start being this way until about November of last year.  Prior to that things would work, just be exceptionally slow which is expected.

Please let us know if you get a resolution outside of this forum.

Brian, we've got some clarification on some of your points and our Data Allowance FAQ has been updated. Mainly:

Q: What do you mean by “significantly slowed and/or restricted”?
A: Your service, or certain uses of your service, will be very slow or curtailed. For example, streaming videos and music, large file downloads, virtual private networking, voice/video chat, gaming and cloud backup services will not work. Remember that using your Free Zone (if your plan has one), the Buy More option or upgrading your service plan are all ways to avoid the significant slowing or restrictions that will result if you use 100% of your data allowance.

As for last year, ending in November, we had temporarily disabled some of the traffic shaping on our network while we worked some things out. As a result, you were likely able to access services during DAP that you ordinarily and currently would not be able to. As a result a lot of mixed messages were sent out, and I apologize for that. I'd be happy to clarify anything you may have questions about.

The issues started for me in Novemeber after 2 years of working while DAPd. That seems to be an awful long time for the system to be temporarily disabled. I will reach out if this occurs again. For now I seem to have gotten the plan and my usage paired up properly.to ensure no more DAP. Thank you for your candid response. It is nice to see Exede step up and explain these changes and acknowledge they were made.

Brian, that is odd. The system was temporarily disabled for 5 months. If it's web or email it should work at a sufficient speed. Other services will likely not. If you run into issues with web or email while DAP'd, do definitely let us know. I do apologize for the confusion related to this policy over the last few months.

WHAT THE HECK!

I did a search to find out if HughesNet blocks Steam too, but when I entered the site, it looks just like Exede (just blue)!
Plus, I was already Log-In!

Don't tell me ViaSat owns HughesNet too!!

Definitely not. As others have mentioned, we just use the same software to manage our forums.

No ViaSat does not own HughesNet they are actually owned by EchoStar.  The reason the forums look the same is they are likely both hosted by getsatisfaction.com Hence their satellite for their Gen4 service is echostar XVII and Exede is ViaSat-1 and the future ViaSat-2

No but they do both use GetSatisfaction for their forums - go to any forum powered by GetSatisfaction once logged in and you're logged into all of them.

Most large "store" sites no longer use static html to display images - instead images are streamed and probably treated as streaming media by ViaSat's Accelenet servers - same restrictions as other forms of streaming media which are frequently misinterpreted to mean simply videos and audios.

For sites like Steam, enable the display of Java Script errors in your browser and you'll likely find a number of errors based on objects not found which prevent the page from displaying at all (or working). Amazon would appear to do a better job of handling those types of errors gracefully while allowing the site to remain usable.

Service up static pictures (by static I mean pics that do not move) should not ever count as streaming media.  If that is indeed what they are doing, then despite the technical claims Exede makes that they are not blocking ANY content, they in fact, are doing so.

Based on previous posts Exede repetetively claims it does not block ANY content when DAP'd, but only slows it down.  I can understand Youtube or Netfix not streaming, but to put policies in place that effectively "block" a site like Amazon is absolutely absurd if one is going to claim to not Block any traffic.  Up until November of last year (yes I will repeat that until I am blue in the face to make the point that this is a change Exede made) this was not a problem.  Now when DAP'd I can use a single bar 3g cell device and get better service than Exede offers - which again according to their other posts should not be the case.

I look forward to seeing Exede resolve these types of issue when DAP'd.

Static within the context that I'm speaking has nothing to do with movement, but rather how the content is delivered and I only offer this as an explanation as to why the "images" fail to display. It is likely the Accelenet server(s) cannot differentiate streamed content "types" and is simply treated as streamed (regardless of what the content is). I have no real interest in defending ViaSat's policies. But if people want to complain about those policies and seek solutions, they should understand what's going on in making their case rather than a simple "blocking" argument, while ViaSat should be a little more transparent and specific in its DAP than a simple  "may not work" and ambiguous "may be restricted".

In point of fact there are images considered static content that move - animated GIFs.

Agreed on both points Old Labs.  The issue is that I can get as specific as I like and I can call and complain as much as I want and ask them to look into issue (I do network support for a living so while I am not by any means an expert in Satellite, I am not stupid either).  It is difficult to get through to the people (in fact, it has been impossible) that actually understand what I am talking about when I say that telnet or pop3 or smtp is not working from a terminal session which uses as little data as you possibly can in the back and forth communications when testing.

I would like to see Exede have more access to higher level technicians that people can actually talk to when these things happen.  At the same time, Exede will not get more specific on the "may not work" because that means there is a specific standard by which they would be accountable.  I understand both sides of things.  It is just very, very frustrating.

Bob, I got a report very similar to yours earlier this week and would like to investigate yours as well. Please send me an email with your account and contact information and reference your post. I need some examples to show engineering and this will help. Thanks.

Should I really go threw all this again, seriously!
(Not trying to be rude), but you can easily just click on the screenshot, save it, then send it to them yourself.

I really do Hate this, I Really do! :(

I really need to move to a better location, with High Speed Cable!!

bob, it's not the screenshot I need, I have already sent that to our engineers. I would like to reference your account specifically for troubleshooting and need your account information to do that. Sorry for the confusion. By examples I meant example accounts.

Look forward to hearing from you.
